Keeping Current
An apple a day the McDonald way
Well, give McDonald's credit for at least trying to do at least one thing nutritionally correct: it is now in the business of buying apples, lots of apples, some 135 million apples a year. And the destination of all those apples is not to be fried or wrapped in dough or dipped in sugar (well, not too much sugar). McDonald, hearing the knock on the door (by lawyers who learned something pursuing cigarette manufacturers), is hopping on the nutrition bandwagon, offering a new item called Apple Dippers. Yes, just like your grandmother told you. Grandmother, of course, didn't dip your apples in caramel sauce, except for Halloween. McDonald's, having suffered many bad knocks in the last few years, is obviously trying to redeem its image as the main thing wrong with America's eating habits.
