Keeping Current

Calories burned-or not

Calories that you don't burn off stay where you put them, as your mother used to say. As usual, Mon was right, as another study, this one published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the premier American medical monthlies, shows. Researchers at Duke University found that middle-aged men and women who walked about three hours each week lost an average of about two pounds over an 8 month period. Those who went for tougher workouts (up to jogging 20 miles a week) lost an average of more than six pounds. The conclusion, as Mom would have known: there is a direct link between the number of calories burned and the amount of weight lost-the more one exercises, the more one benefits.
